el 15-Feb-2007 | It is a beautiful chilly morning in Caracas, Venezuela, and I have woken up with a mild cheer within my soul. It felt wrong, so I went to the BBC News website to get informed and kill the damn "happy".
My last (and first) entry was centered around both the Kosovo issue and general hatred all over the world. Hatred is fashionable. I had no idea when I was younger. I used to think hatred was cool, now I'm such a hippie.
Anyway, I thought it'd be in order to announce that now I can say without risk of looking stupid that I support Kosovo's independence.
I spent yesterday doing 3 things, of which only one prides me: stuck in traffic inside of a bus with only 50 songs in my MP3 player for over 2 hours under a merciless sun; watching TV while I should have been working; and (this is the one that prides me) reading about Kosovo.
I'm going to explain why I support it, so nobody can tell me afterwards that I'm talking out of my ass. OK, so over the years, a small piece of land that represents some of the poorest 15% of Serbia's territory, has gotten more and more full of albanians. So full of freaking albanians that now they represent 90% of the population, and, as it is tradition for both Yugoslavia's babies and Russia's babies, they decided that being part of Serbia was not as fun as governing themselves, so they want their independent state. This comes from way back, and got worse as Milosevic decided to shut them up altogether and started stripping them from the authority the 1974 constitution had given them, and then later decided to open fire.
Of course, as it is also tradition, ethnic albanians enjoy beating the crap out of the few ethnic serbs that still remain inside the province, and viceversa, which is mostly how they to got where they are now.
This is the thing: albanians want their independence, even though Kosovo is one of the poorest places they could have chosen as their own, because they feel that if an autonomous province comprises 90% of... let's say, apples, it makes sense that they be a country of apples and not part of a country of pears. But Serbia doesn't feel so happy about giving it away. Not because of economic reasons, because there aren't any, nor because they give a crap about the few serbs that still live there, because it is increasingly obvious that they're not such a big deal to them, but because apparently Kosovo represents the birthplace of their nation.
Now, while I respect the very sentimental reason why Serbia's reluctant to let go, I'd be very opposed to giving Kosovo straight back to them, because I can't imagine how it'd go for Kosovars now that they've acted up. I would never believe that, if it could ever be the case, Serbia would take them back lovingly and forgive them the mistake of asking for independence both peacefully and not so peacefully.
Looking at it objectively, there's not a lot of way out. Going back is, as I said, not an option, and the UN and NATO can't be there forever to care for Baby Kosovo. Someone's gotta give, at some point, because it's the best for the people.
The plan that was presented recently was actually quite good, and it made a lot of sense, but Serbia is more than just reluctant to cave, and as albanians grow tired of depending on the UN and serbs grow tired of the conflict in itself, one can only assume war is going to spark up again if someone doesn't give in already.
I guess we're just gonna have to wait.
I'll post something on the rest of the world later, but I kinda needed some closure on that subject.
