el 31-Dec-1969 | Yesterday, after his white blood count continued to drop, the doctors decided a blood transfusion might help. By the time I left they'd just hooked him up and he was incredibly drowsy and spaced out. The haemotologist had been in and when she asked if dad was drinking enough fluid he once again mentioned 'coughing' when he eats and drinks, the doctor asked if it was like choking and decided to send a referral to the speech and language therapist.
This morning I got a text from my sister saying he was much more alert and that they'd decided to send him home (after several hours of paperwork of course), so I got on the case of the carers to make sure they were going to turn up when he was home. We were all pleased to hear he'd perked up, although that's now brought us back to the problem of finding someone to be with him during the day when my brother works, dad's girlfriend works, my sister has a 19 month baby who isn't allowed near dad because of the germs and I'm 300 miles away! Still, we can sort something out I'm sure!!
About half an hour ago I got a text from my sister saying he ISN'T going to be discharged - the speech and language therapist believes that when dad drinks he's swallowing into his lungs which is why he's choking so they need to investigate that - in fact, the SLT seemed surprised that she'd not been called sooner.
I've just had a THIRD text to say that he IS going home because they can't do any scans for the SLT 'till next week - he's also having an MRI scan of his brain on Tuesday to see how it's going and then chemo starts NEXT Friday (they made a mistake when they said this Friday) so I need to find out whether he goes in to hospital on Friday to start chemo or whether, like last time, he goes in a few days before for tests n stuff.
There's one thing I'd been keen to ask your opinions of....a friend of a friend has suggested that we should "look at what the Americans do" and demand our doctors do the same treatment and give him the same drugs, but I feel a bit like that'd be telling the doctors how to do their jobs...what do you think? I mean, if it'd help then maybe it's worth doing...? Do the Americans really know best when it comes to treatments? I'm not going to lie, I don't have the best opinion of the NHS after the last few months, but surely they'd be doing what's best??

*UPDATE* No he's not being discharged....well they've just said he isn't and they're taking his order for dinner.....
*UPDATE AGAIN* he's now at home, but my brother says he's very weak and possibly should have stayed in the hospital.... :-/
