el 31-Dec-1969 | Well after my last post, dad eventually got sent home, but he was so ill that my brother was terrified that he'd choke overnight, which lead to a sleepless night and a decision to get dad taken back to hospital. By this point, dad was so weak that everyone was quite scared that he wasn't going to make it through this.
He's been in hospital for a week now and for most of that time he's been back in the chemo ward rather then the medical admissions ward. I'm going to be completely honest and say that the impression I've had from everyone is that the MAU was a lot more considerate of dad as a person as well as a symptom whereas my family have found the chemo ward to be less attentive to his individual concerns. That said, I appreciate so much what they're doing and am glad he's being looked after. On Tuesday the doctors took a look at his throat and concluded that the choking issue wasn't a serious one and that it was probably a side affect of the chemo and infection, he also perked up a bit and became a lot more chatty. On Wednesday he had an MRI scan to see if there had been any change in the tumour since the first round of chemo three weeks ago and the good news is that it has shrunk; the bad news is that the bleed still seems to be a big problem and is still very much there, but I need to confirm whether it's still the same amount of blood or whether it's now just a mass of scar tissue. Since this news I've heard lots of positives- dad has begun getting out of bed more and more and even walking to the toilet and things independently - it's slow going, but things are finally brightening.
Dad starts round 2 of chemo today (depending on blood test results) I'm getting the train down after work (6 hours of travelling - happy days), so hopefully I'll be able to report some more news.....
Oh yeah, one more thing, after gleefully telling us he'd had no symptoms from the chemo, dad woke up on Tuesday to find a pile of hair on his pillow - his mid-life crisis floppy hair has now been shaved off, and I'm told he looks a bit like a convict!
